Are you a content creator with a brand?
Hint: If you have a twitch channel (or other platform) with a name, you have a brand.
But do you own your brand?
If you are treating your Twitch, Twitter, Instagram, Discord, and YouTube channels as your online home, you don’t own your brand.
You are building someone else’s brand.
Obviously these platforms are critical to your success as a content creator. You cannot succeed without them.
Every new audience member you bring in with a follow or a subscribe is owned by the platform. Not you. If someone follows you for a while and disappears, they are gone for good.
You build relationships with your viewers but you have no way to reach them (with few very small exceptions). They can only reach you.
What if you get banned from Twitch or Twitter? It happens more than you think. Sometimes you get your account back. Sometimes you don’t. Can you recover from that? If you have a website, you can.
What if one of the platforms makes a business shift that doesn’t allow you to operate effectively? Tumblr just killed nearly half of their content creators’ businesses in a single day by banning certain content.
You should have a home base for your content.
Your own website should be the first thing people find when searching for you on Google, or at least in the top results in case people can’t find you on another platform.
Your audience is your livelihood. Or it could be. If you’re limiting yourself to bits, subs, and donations, you’re leaving so much on the table. And you don’t even own that audience. Twitch does.
By training your audience to interact with you on your website, you can do so much more to engage with them and to turn your brand into a business. When you own your own audience, you can communicate with them on your own terms, mobilizing them to work for you.
A website also acts as your pitch deck, your profile, and your portfolio. It gives potential sponsors something to look at and feel good that you’re a professional.
